Thursday's concert.. muse: a night to remember.. lots of people have asked me what on earth does muse mean.. and i have no idea.. and why is it called a night to remember.. like we're not supposed to really remember other concerts except for this one?
Afternoon.. supposed to report at 2pm.. met ying shi, mei juan and este on the mrt.. i remeber it was exactly 2 when we walked in.. dunno why everyone was already seated by then.. i guess the new exco under wernjun places huge emphasis on punctuality then.. after briefing we left for vch.. there was some exchange thing btwn seniors and juniors.. i didnt get anything for my seniors and neither did jia wei coz guys suck at this kinda thing.. i think.. well john, este and matin wrote messages on the back of photos.. jonathan gave me a pear.. haha..
Concert started at 8 and darn hot on stage.. i think vch temporarily became victoria concert oven or something.. maybe they were trying to reduce rental costs by turning off the air con and rely on the ever reliable wind like the good old days.. anyway.. started with Multitude.. which isnt the actual name of the piece but its too long to write in full.. found out the composer's a trumpeter.. which explains why he thinks everyone's as pro as him.. the 1sts had top C for last note which lasted a few bars.. and the piece is so tiring.. what a great start.. next was Firestorm.. when played correctly, its supposed to sound like a mess.. and i think we did a great job sounding like a mess.. just like the gulf war from which the composer got his inspiration from.. English Folk Song Suite was ok.. not much to say really.. how exciting can playing offbeats get? my dad said this piece was around during his time.. so i guess they were clearing the library and discovered this piece covered with cobwebs and decided why not?.. interval.. took photos.. prob upload them some other time.. i heard alumni band was quite good.. and so was the percussion section's presentation after that.. GR selections was next.. my fave piece.. coz it has lots of rests =) the composer should be given an award for his contributions to the welfare of the lips of trumpet players.. haha.. it didnt make my hair stand like once during a band prac but it was ok i guess.. finally we play harry potter suite.. i finally play 1st trumpet but by now my lips feel like dropping off.. me, john and jonathan didnt quite get the running notes sorted out but we somehow managed to smoke our way through.. the last note top D was john's solo coz i cant reach it and jonathan said later that he didnt reach it either.. so there were shouts for encore and we did best songs ever.. which was a collection of cheesy songs that were apparantly quite popular when i was around negative 17 yrs old.. as usual, its a trumpet heavy piece so half the section played 1st trumpet.. when trumpeties get tired at the last part, we just whack all we can.. so the high notes sounded like breathless screaming.. haha.. oh well.. that isnt exactly how ymca's supposed to sound but anyway the audience were having fun by clapping along..
For every climax, there's an anti-climax and that was bringing everything back to school... lots of people left from vch so only abt 20 people did the shifting in school.. mostly j1s.. me and jonathan made a pact to be able to do the harry potter running notes by end of this year.. haha.. hmm.. what else.. me and joel raided the fridge for this ice thing where you bite off the end and suck the ice.. thats the best i can describe it.. but ruth demanded 10 cents for it.. haha.. finally reached home at 12.30 or so.. no more band for at least 2 weeks!!
A night to remember... i'm kinda sad the j2s are leaving.. they really made life easy for us.. everything i couldnt play, i could trust my seniors to cover for me.. i wonder if i've been a great junior.. hmm.. oh well.. there're 4 of us left to fill their shoes.. thats 1 per part.. we're soloists for now.. wow.. no more slacking.. haha.. A Night To Remember.. =)
